Interest in thermally insulated swimming pools has grown considerably over recent years, especially in the light of increasing energy costs and DEFRA’s Carbon Emissions Reduction Targets. We at Oasis Swimming Pools Kent have been developing ways of achieving energy-saving, highly efficient swimming pools over many years, and we can now offer you an insulated swimming pool, designed specifically to meet with your requirements and budget. We offer a full thermally insulated panel pool system or add insulation to your vinyl-liner or concrete pool as required. This achieves varying results based on how far you want to go and how much you can afford to spend.
It is worth remembering that around 95% of a pool’s heat loss occurs at the surface of a swimming pool, mostly through evaporation to the air and radiation to the sky. A swimming pool cover is an effective way to keep heat and water in a swimming pool by reducing evaporation of water from the pool when it is not in use, reducing radiant heat losses. A pool cover can reduce water loss by 30 to 50 percent. This is important when you realise that for each 5 litres of 27°C water that evaporates, you lose around 2.34kWh (8,000 Btu) from the pool. Reducing water loss also reduces the amount of chemical water treatment required so its a win win if your pool is covered correctly. Remember, outdoor pools can gain a significant amount of heat from the sun, absorbing 75 to 85 percent of the solar energy striking the pool surface, so fitting a simple thermal cover to stop heat loss from the pool, may not be the right solution, on an outdoor pool, as they are not very efficient at utilising any heat gain. However, this would be the right cover on an indoor pool where no solar gain is possible.
Things you may consider when thermally insulating your swimming pool:
- Reduced energy costs heating the pool
- Reduced Co2 emissions
- Insulated pipe work & pool plant building also
- Reduced use of chemicals
- Reduced loss of water
